The Importance of Documentation

Thorough documentation of an event means that you, as a witness, believe that what you saw was worthy enough to remember accurately. It also adds credibility when you tell it to others. It allows the details to be reviewed and researched, compared against all possible interpretations for veracity. Documentation shows you’ve done your due diligence in researching your experience.

Equally importantly, it cements our memory.

As we grow older, our memories become colored by events and experiences that change our life. We inadvertently cast interpretation upon our memories, forget details, and as we attempt to recollect, perhaps add in details we may have missed.

While our recollection may shift as life happens to us, it doesn’t change the truth of what happened. Anyone can tell a tall tale, but those are the people who fall away when the light of truth is shined on their experiences. People with real experiences want to know the truth – they seek it out.
